A&I 1-48
J.V. da Graça, E.S. Louzada, and J.W. Sauls · Proceedings of the International Society of Citriculture · 2004
The paper reports nucellar Ruby Red budwood irradiated in 1963, with a darker selection designated A&I 1-48 found in 1971; it was not commercially released (p. 369). Discovery/selection is not release.

Section 5.2 describes A&I 1-48 as an unreleased darker-pigmented selection from 1963 irradiated nucellar Ruby Red budwood and as the parent of Rio Red. The chapter gives conflicting Rio Red discovery years (1976 and 1978); this citation does not resolve that conflict. Retain the catalog’s documented 1976 selection and 1984 release chronology.

The account traces A&I-1-48 from 1963 thermal-neutron or X-ray irradiation of budwood from selected Ruby Red seedlings; budded trees were planted in a comparison trial in 1971. It reports a natural bud mutation on an A&I-1-48 tree in 1976, designated A&I-1-48S and released by Texas A&I Citrus Center as Rio Red in 1984 (p. 3). This is a retrospective historical account, not a new trial or independent verification of the 1976 discovery.

The authors recount that Richard Hensz irradiated Ruby Red budwood, leading to selection of the darker grapefruit A&I 1-48; one tree later produced a bud sport Hensz considered suitable for commercialization, named Rio Red and released in 1984 (p. 46). The remembrance supports Hensz’s breeding and selection role but does not say he personally discovered the sport.

The article discusses A&I 1-48 in grapefruit breeding history as a selection from irradiated Ruby Red budwood. It provides historical context and does not establish later cultivar-release milestones.
