Changsha Mandarin

Changsha is a mandarin noted for cold hardiness, seedy fruit and a tendency to bear heavily in alternate years. UGA’s Sweet Frost is a distinct seed-reduced selection derived from Changsha.^⁠[6]

UCR’s CRC 3577 was received as seed from John Cree, Jr., at Texas Agricultural Experiment Station No. 19 in 1963. Its notes describe small, puffy fruit and survival of the 1962–63 Crystal City winter freeze, but an October 1988 accession-book entry questions the identity of this material. These descriptions remain specific to that accession; they do not establish that all trees sold as Changsha are identical.^⁠[1]

Published tastings describe differing Changsha samples. The Mulberries’ fruit from Stan’s Farm had few seeds and peeled easily; a companion scorecard calls it UGA Sweet Frost, but the identification remains unresolved. A separate Sweet Home Alabama Homestead tasting describes an easy-peeling fruit with many seeds and a mild flavor.^{⁠[7]⁠[9]⁠[8]}
