Colman Citrange
Genetic Ancestry
- 50% Poncirus trifoliata
- 50% Sweet Orange
The 1907 USDA circular describes Colman as a hybrid of Trifoliate orange (mother parent) and common orange (father parent). It describes the fruit as compressed-spherical, often oblique, light orange to lemon yellow, and covered with short, stiff colorless hairs. The circular gives no cross date or accession.[1]
The circular reports that young Colman trees in northern Florida endured 15–18°F without noticeable effect, while also stating that cold resistance had not been thoroughly tested. It gives no exposure duration or tree accession, so this remains a historical observation rather than a cultivar-wide minimum.[1]
