The paper reports Foster as a Walters bud sport found in Florida in 1907 and the first pink-pigmented grapefruit variety in its account; it distinguishes membrane pigmentation in Foster from the later flesh pigmentation described for Pink Marsh/Thompson (p. 369).

Citrus ID entry for Foster quotes Hodgson (1967) for origin/discovery/introduction and supplies descriptive morphology. Its category-coded key description has no accession, date, sample size or measurement protocol; photo captions include Riverside, California and Winter Haven, Florida. The references list competing taxonomic treatments, not a resolution of Foster’s classification.

The authors' historical account states that Foster was observed in 1907 as a pink-fleshed, seedy limb sport of Walters and was called Foster by Royal Palms Nursery after finder R. B. Foster. The passage is secondary history, not a contemporaneous origin record; it also describes Walters as a midseason seedy white grapefruit with a reported 1887 seedling origin near Belleview, Florida (printed p. 2, PDF p. 2).

Chromosome Research 15(1), 115–121 (2007); DOI 10.1007/s10577-006-1101-2. The PubMed abstract reports sequential CMA/DAPI staining and rDNA-FISH for six grapefruit, two pummelos and one tangelo. It places Foster Grapefruit in the group reported to have two CMA-positive C-type and six D-type chromosomes, with four reported 45S rDNA sites. Two chromosomes carried 5S rDNA across the accessions. Full text was not available in the inspected publisher view. These marker patterns are not a ploidy determination, full chromosome count, shared cultivar identity or proof of this cultivar's parentage.

Primary cultivar-specific experimental evidence. Table 1 classifies embryo number and male fertility; embryo means were measured under a stereoscopic microscope in twenty seeds per cultivar, except Foster Pink and Marsh whose embryo count was not examined. Table 2 reports selected zygotic progeny from controlled crosses; it is not a percentage of all seeds that are zygotic. Material grown at Sasaguri Orchard, Kyushu University Farm, Fukuoka, Japan. Preserve the difference between parent fertility and male fertility segregating among offspring. DOI:10.2503/jjshs1.82.203.
