Notes
A traditional Italian lemon cultivar named for the port city of Genoa and associated with Mediterranean citrus trade. It is characterized by a vigorous, thorny tree and medium to large, thick-rinded, highly acidic fruit. Valued historically for its productivity, durability, and relative cold tolerance among lemons, Genoa represents an important Old World lemon lineage that predates modern standardized cultivars such as Eureka and Lisbon.
It is the leading lemon variety in Chile and accounts for 83% of the planted area. Genoa produces fruit almost all year round in Chile, with an intermediate proportion of fruit during the summer and autumn months (30%). The fruit has very good appearance, is ellipsoid in shape with a small pointed neck and nipple and is of medium size. It has a smooth thin rind, high juice content and a relatively low number of seeds (3-8). It bears fruit on the outside of the canopy making it prone to wind damage.
