Notes
It belongs to the papeda group, an ancient lineage of citrus known for exceptional cold hardiness, strong aromatic qualities, and genetic importance in citrus breeding.
Ichang papeda is characterized by its very large winged petioles, often broader than the leaf blade itself, making it one of the most visually distinctive citrus species. The tree is vigorous, thorny, and notably cold-tolerant, surviving temperatures well below those tolerated by most true citrus.
The fruit is medium-sized with a thick, aromatic rind rich in essential oils. While generally too sour and resinous for fresh eating, the rind and juice are valued for culinary and aromatic uses, including flavoring, marmalade, and traditional applications. The aroma is complex—often described as intensely citrusy with herbal and resinous notes—making it especially prized as a breeding parent rather than a dessert fruit.
