Iwasaki Satsuma
Givaudan Citrus Variety Collection at UC Riverside
People & organizations: UCR
https://citrusvariety.ucr.edu/crc4218 (opens in a new tab)
UCR accession CRC 4218 / VI 781; identifies Citrus unshiu, received as budwood from Spain via CCPP in October 2009, and describes origin as probably a limb sport of an existing Satsuma cultivar. Riverside ripening is October–November; listed collection rootstocks are Carrizo and C-35. The page also contains 38 accession-level fruit-quality rows from 2012–2016 across Riverside and Lindcove, with varied rootstocks, ages and 5- or 10-fruit samples. The table's SSC/Mean SSC columns are not labeled as Brix, and the page does not equate them with Brix; titration units and physical dimension/weight units are not established. A separate 2011 note relays a secondhand account of September maturity in Spain and vigorous growth on Carrizo; this is not a direct trial.

Todolí collection record TCF-221. Origin is explicitly unclear; a point mutation of an early cultivar, possibly Owari, is presented as tentative. General tree/fruit account describes very low vigor, a small somewhat open productive tree, and medium oblate satsumas with smooth thin orange rind, easy peeling, seedless juicy yellow-orange flesh and mild aroma. The page gives collection record TCF-221 but no sampled-tree site, rootstock, sample count, observation date or method. This low-vigor account differs from UCR's secondhand statement of vigorous Iwasaki growth on Carrizo; retain the distinct contexts. Plain 'sweet' is not a scored intensity.

Iwasaki was sampled at one site because of limited availability. The report gives means from 2022 and 2023, with five fruits per cultivar/site juiced in late September and mid-October. Iwasaki late-September means: Brix 8.0 and titratable acidity 0.96; mid-October: Brix 9.6 and titratable acidity 0.91. Peel was noticeably looser by mid-October. These are trial observations for the reported samples; rootstock assignments are not specified for Iwasaki.

Post #7 says Paul had Iwasaki but it had not fruited; he expected it to be the earliest of his satsumas. This is an expectation, not observed Iwasaki earliness. The attached image is expressly identified as Miho and is not evidence about Iwasaki.

Iwasaki posts #152 (16 Aug 2026), #159 (23 Sep 2026), and #172 (1 Oct 2026). Post #152 is one open-pollinated, seedless fruit from the author's potted tree, with maturity uncertainty; #159 is a tasting sample with tree, site and provenance unspecified, reported Brix 9 and no seed; #172 says the potted plant was not fully colored in October, with a local-climate comparison and pot-culture caveat. Do not combine them into one sample. Site, rootstock, age or standardized maturity are not given. Plain/relative taste wording is not scored; the Brix method for post #159 is unspecified. Post #173 (14 Oct 2026) is a separate ripe-fruit report: one tasted fruit was very juicy and seedless; the author reported a refractometer reading a little above 14 °Bx, typical Satsuma aroma and a possible honey note, and left another fruit on the tree for later. Exact Brix value, calibration, site, rootstock and harvest date are unspecified. Qualitative flavor comparisons remain unscored; keep all posts and samples distinct.
