OP Nagami Kumquat
Genetic Ancestry
- 100% Kumquat
The Mulberries presenter calls this specimen OP Nagami, an open-pollinated Nagami seedling associated with Dr. Brown’s collection. Virginia Fruit Grower separately reports an open-pollinated Nagami graft that survived temperatures around 3°F and describes its fruit as basically seedless; exposure duration and protection are not stated, so the report is not a general hardiness minimum. Neither account identifies a pollen parent or establishes equivalence to US-1515.[1][5]
The single reported fruit weighed 2.5 g and yielded a spoken 15 °Bx reading; the presenter described it as seedless, tightly attached/unpeelable, very juicy for its size, and very sweet with fairly sour flavor and essentially no bitterness. The companion scorecard reports sweetness 10, sourness 9 and bitterness 10; catalog intensity scores are 10/1/0 after reversing sourness and bitterness. The card and video describe the same tasting; pH is unknown.[1][2]
A user-supplied excerpt attributed to eyecrk says an OP Nagami start came from a citrus mentor, Dr. Bob Motyca, about a decade before 2019. It reports the writer’s original plant was lost in the 2013–14 freeze and a long-dormant approach graft later grew vigorously in spring 2019. A separate Growing Fruit commenter relays a propagation account through a local mentor, Oregon Exotics and Dr. Brown. These accounts do not establish a named pollen parent, equivalence to US-1515, or a measured cold limit.[3][4]
