UF/IFAS EDIS states that W. T. Swingle of the USDA made the Dancy tangerine × Duncan grapefruit cross in 1911; it says the hybrid was initially called Lake tangelo and later renamed Orlando. The abstract does not specify cross direction or the year of the name change.

USDA Circular 181 describes CPB 52018-G-26 under the name Lake and says the name was chosen because it first fruited at Eustis, Lake County, Florida. UCR reproduces Hodgson’s later account that the variety originally named Lake was renamed Orlando to avoid confusion. Neither account gives a year for the renaming, so the event date remains unknown.
