Ray Ruby Grapefruit

Historical accounts place Ray Ruby’s discovery in Texas in 1970 and attribute it to Robert Ray, but differ on the orchard location; Rouse et al. report an orchard north of Mission and say the nursery source and mother tree were unrecorded. Rouse et al. report that Texas A&I released Ray Ruby in 1977. A later Florida budwood-program report records CGIP-103 with a 6/13/86 release-date entry and notes 60,000 Ray Ruby bud eyes distributed in 1986–87; these refer to separate institutional milestones.^{⁠[2]⁠[4]⁠[8]⁠[9]}

Citrus ID describes fruit as broad as long or longer than broad, with red-to-purplish flesh. Citrus Australia reports low seed numbers and, in southern Australia, pink/red flesh that is often paler at the centers of the segments. UCR lists February–June ripening at Riverside for accession CRC 3915.^{⁠[4]⁠[5]⁠[1]}

A 2012–2014 Indian River, Florida trial found that rootstock affected Ray Ruby fruit size, total solids and solids:acid ratio. In a separate grower report, one fruit harvested at uncertain maturity was described as juicy, firm, sour and not sweet.^⁠[7]⁠[3]
