Silverhill Satsuma

UCR identifies its Silverhill accession as CRC 4072 / PI 654860 / VI 603 and says Riverside received it as budwood from A. Harty in New Zealand. Swingle’s article dated January 3, 1931 proposed “Silverhill Satsuma” for CPB No. 7272; UCR and the Hodgson account reproduced by Citrus ID describe Silverhill as a nucellar seedling selection of Owari from Swingle’s Florida cross around 1908. The Hodgson account says California collections were nearly indistinguishable from Frost Owari, but this is a historical comparison, not proof the cultivars are genetically identical.^⁠[1]⁠[2]

UF/IFAS describes Silverhill trees as vigorous and productive with a more upright habit, and the fruit as medium, somewhat oblate, thin-rinded and smooth, with abundant juice and a very sweet, high-sugar/low-acid profile. It lists October–November maturity and 0–6 seeds, rarely present. UCR’s CRC 4072 fruit-evaluation rows from Riverside and Lindcove include variable seed counts, and UCR lists the Riverside season as October–December. Swingle’s historical account reports that young CPB No. 7272 trees defoliated after the January 1924 freeze at Silverhill, Alabama, but otherwise escaped injury and had leafed out by May; this is not a general cold threshold.^⁠[3]⁠[1]
