Texas Red Grapefruit, formally named Texas Red TR-1, is a spontaneous somatic bud sport of Rio Red discovered in Weslaco, Texas, in 2004. US Plant Patent 31,702 was granted on 28 April 2020.[1][2][3]
Its fruit is described as spherical to oblate, with reddish-orange rind and deep-red flesh. The patent’s approximately seven-year-old C-22-rooted Weslaco trees yielded a reported mean fruit weight of 466.96 g and soluble solids of 9.15 °Brix; sample count was not supplied. It gives an October–March harvest window. The 2021 review notes fruit clusters inside the canopy, while the 2026 paper’s cultivar table describes season-stable flesh color.[3][2][1]
The patent describes a vigorous, dense, compact tree and records sensitivity to citrus greening; other diseases and pests were untested. It supplies no disease-test method or trial details.[3]
