Trovita is presumed to have originated around 1916 at Riverside from fallen fruit thought to be Washington navel. This catalog follows the historical cultivar account; UCR also lists 1915 seedling receipt, which is treated as an unresolved accession-record inconsistency. The pollen parent is unknown.

Howard B. Frost selected the promising seedling in 1928. Unlike Washington navel, the fruit lacked a navel and was smaller, juicier, and milder in flavor.
