US-119 is a USDA hybrid with parentage recorded as (Duncan grapefruit × Poncirus trifoliata) × Succory sweet orange. Succory is a recorded name for Succari; the exact pollen-parent accession has not been established. UCR identifies its original seedling as FF 5-9-11.[1][6]
Taste reports vary. Tough Citrus compared a fruit presented as US-119 to orange-flavored Pixy Sticks, while Virginia Fruit Grower described an unripe-orange-like flavor with some sweetness. Growers also report splitting, including after uneven watering followed by rain.[14][13]
In leaf-disc tests conducted from fall 1993 to spring 1997, US-119 scions on Swingle citrumelo were more freezing-tolerant than Hamlin orange and similar to satsuma overall. Grower reports include both winter losses and survival, so the laboratory comparison does not establish a guaranteed outdoor temperature limit.[11][2][10]
