US-1282 originated from a controlled 1995 cross of Cleopatra mandarin × Gotha Road #6 trifoliate orange made by Dr. Kim D. Bowman at A.H. Whitmore Foundation Farm in Florida. During field testing the selection was identified as BS95-V5-78 or US-1282.

Made the 1995 Cleopatra mandarin × Gotha Road #6 trifoliate orange cross that produced US-1282 Citrandarin.
USDA-ARS released US-1282 to nurserymen and growers. The agency document credits Kim D. Bowman with planning and conducting field testing and Greg McCollum with fruit-quality evaluation. In a St. Lucie flatwoods Hamlin-scion trial, seven trees per rootstock yielded 63 kg/tree on US-1282 and 19 kg/tree on Swingle in 2013; the release describes relative tolerance under HLB pressure, not resistance. Bowman & McCollum (2015) dates the USDA release to September 2014.
