USDA Circular 181 reports that several experimental tangelo seedlings were sent to H. S. Williams at Rockledge, Florida, around 1900. It says only CPB 1397 proved to be a true hybrid and later identifies it as a sister hybrid of Sampson (CPB 1316). The Circular does not identify CPB 1397’s specific parents; UCR lists its parents/origins as unknown.
Several experimental tangelo seedlings were sent to H. S. Williams of Rockledge, Florida, around 1900. Only CPB 1397 proved to be a true hybrid and ultimately became Williams tangelo.

The locally established name Williams tangelo was formally adopted for CPB 1397 in USDA Circular 181, New Citrus Hybrids, published in August 1931.

The Riverside citrus collection received Williams tangelo as budwood from the USDA station at Glenn Dale, Maryland, in 1945. The accession became CRC 2787 / PI 149429.

E. S. Williams, son of H. S. Williams, later took budwood of CPB 1397 to Fort Pierce, propagated the selection, and established a grove of several acres. The fruit was marketed locally to hotels and private customers and became known regionally as Williams tangelo.
