Initiated the NSW Agriculture citrus rootstock breeding programme in 1945 that produced Benton citrange.
In 1945, Dr F. T. Bowman initiated an NSW Agriculture citrus-rootstock breeding program to obtain rootstocks compatible with Eureka lemon, resistant to Phytophthora, and tolerant of citrus tristeza virus. Benton was selected from that program.
