5 Star Citrumelo

In thread posts #20688 (Ilya11, 24 December 2010), #20804 (Sylvain, 31 December 2010), and #20816 (Ilya11, 31 December 2010), contributors describe a seed-grown F2 Swingle hybrid bought from B. Voss, reportedly arising from Swingle citrumelo seed. Ilya describes it as a rare zygotic seed after pollination, with pollen possibly from selfing or another citrus at Voss’s. These are grower reports, not genetic confirmation; the pollen parent is unknown and the thread does not establish that Ilya’s circulated plant was Voss’s retained selected 5*.

Section “Citrumelo 5*,” first two paragraphs, reports that the circulated Ilya plant was called 5* but that Bernhard Voss later said it was not his selected 5*. This is a later secondary account; it preserves a naming dispute and does not identify a molecularly verified clone.

In his 2010-12-24 08:01 post, Ilya reports a roughly 2 m evergreen 5 Star/Improved Swingle bush received from Bernhard Voss, grafted on Poncirus and left uncovered; he reports no winter damage. The preceding winter included three weeks of frozen ground, one night at −16 °C and the following day at −12 °C. The exact freeze date and daily exposure duration are not given. This is the same Ilya/Voss first-harvest episode documented in the Agrumes-Passion thread, not an independent cold-survival sample.

Reply #12 (2024-07-03), Till, profile Simmerath, Germany. He describes his “Swingle 5 Star” and says it dies back to ground even in mild winters with lows around −10 °C, which he attributes to the short growing season. No exact winter date, tree rootstock, or protection is given. This accession is not established as identical to Ilya’s plant or the later Improved 5star selection.

In posts #28811–#28828 (20–21 November 2011), Ilya11 discusses material labeled “Swingle5* (from Bernhardt Voss nursery),” attributing its description as a vigorous Swingle seedling to B. Voss. Ilya reports fruit from his own plant; the thread does not establish that this accession is identical to Voss’s retained selection or a genetically verified clone. Its reported −16°C no-damage winter overlaps the same Ilya/Voss episode cited in source #3 and is not an independent cold-survival report.

Kumin describes the 5 Star in his collection as vigorous, densely branched, deep green and strongly evergreen. He reports that a high-grafted plant on Poncirus was damaged but survived 2°F and failed at −8°F. The post follows discussion of a conservatory plant called Swingle 5 Star; a later reply says the plants look very similar or identical, but does not establish that they are the same clone or accession. Nearby open-pollinated seedlings are not evidence about the named parent variety.
