World of CitrusC-35 Citrange
A 1951 cross at the UC Citrus Research Center used Ruby orange (CRC 589) and trifoliate orange (CRC 2552), with R.C. Baines participating. C-35 was selected from the resulting F1 hybrid population.
Conducted the breeding program in which C-35 was created and began its evaluation as a citrus rootstock.
The 1986 paper states that C-35 was being released for rootstock trial. This describes a trial release, not unrestricted commercial release.
The 1986 HortScience paper states that C-35 was being released for rootstock trial; its authors are affiliated with the UC Riverside Citrus Research Center. The paper does not use the term “expanded.”

C-35 supplied seed for kumin’s southeastern Pennsylvania trial of more than 20,000 seedlings. The breeder estimated a mainly nucellar seed lot with a smaller zygotic component; the pollen parent was unconfirmed. The later Conestoga selections came from this trial.
Kumin corrected the earlier assumption that all presumed C-35 seedlings had died: some plants resprouted belatedly from underground roots and might have been nucellar C-35. He distinguished this from the living above-ground stems of his selected survivors; identities remained inferred.
