The Citrus Industry (1967), quoted by UCR, credits Walter T. Swingle with introducing the Japanese Hiryo, or Flying Dragon, variety to the United States in 1915.

UCR records that seed from H. Yoshimura of the University of Osaka, Japan, was received in 1958 and established in the University of California citrus collection. The collection identifies the material as CRC 3330A, PI 539768, and VI 383.

Cheng and Roose reported a five-year field comparison of Cutter Valencia trees grafted on open-pollinated Flying Dragon seedlings. The grafted trees separated into 34 dwarf and seven nondwarf trees; the authors’ marker results and segregation analysis supported a single dominant dwarfing gene in heterozygous Flying Dragon. They found Flying Dragon identical to nondwarfing trifoliate-orange accessions at the 40 tested isozyme and RFLP markers and inferred that it probably arose as a mutation without later sexual recombination.

Flying Dragon is recorded as a Japanese dwarf form of Poncirus trifoliata, called Hiryo or Flying Dragon. Its original mutation date, place, discoverer, and selector remain undocumented.
