Harvey Lemon is of unknown origin and parentage. Citrus ID reports Harvey Smith found it on George James's property in Clearwater, Florida. UF/IFAS says it was selected in 1940 and describes its fruit as similar to Eureka. Citrus ID's 1964 budwood entry concerns seed-derived clone F-41-39; it does not establish the variety's parentage.[1][2]
Citrus ID describes Harvey fruit as broader than long, with a slightly rough, leathery rind and yellow flesh. Both it and UF/IFAS say its fruit characteristics are similar to Eureka.[2][1]
Cold reports differ by specimen and conditions. Tropical Fruit Forum replies report near-root dieback and regrowth for an unprotected potted rooted cutting after two nights at 22–23°F, and no damage at 27–28°F for a separate trifoliate-rootstock orchard tree; its owner used frost blankets while it was under five feet, but the cited exposure’s protection is unclear. Reddit reports apparent top dieback after an unspecified winter despite intermittent covers, with basal shoots of uncertain identity. A legacy forum gives a subjective ranking below Meyer and Ichang. These reports do not establish universal survival limits or the 16°F claim.[3][4][5]
