Hodgson's 1967 history, citing Ziegler and Wolfe (1961), describes a mandarin parent tree reportedly brought from Tangier and planted at Palatka by Major Atway. The property was acquired by N. H. Moragne in 1843, and Hodgson says the tree was known as the Moragne tangierine. This is a retrospective account; it does not establish the cultivar's original geographic origin or who assigned the name.[1]
