Carpenter C-54 Citrandarin

Carpenter C-54 is a Sunki mandarin × Swingle trifoliate orange hybrid from the USDA breeding program at Indio, California, subsequently selected and tested at UCR. UCR released it in August 2009, with CCPP budwood distribution beginning that September. The reviewed release documentation does not establish the name’s honoree.^⁠[6]⁠[2]

The UCR rootstock trials describe medium-large trees and good yields, with moderate freezing tolerance in young trees. C-54 was described as CTV tolerant, moderately tolerant to Phytophthora parasitica and calcareous soils, and highly tolerant to citrus nematode; ^⁠[6]greenhouse nematode results remain specific to the tested population.^⁠[7]

The Mulberries’ sample averaged 26 g, with 14.5 °Brix and approximate pH 3.3. The matching card describes low sweetness, very sour flavor, moderate bitterness and moderate edibility. The reviewer found it peelable, while a separate grower’s Carrizo-grafted sample was mushy and difficult to peel, illustrating differences among samples.^{⁠[3]⁠[8]⁠[5]}
