Furr C-57 is a Sunki mandarin × Swingle trifoliate orange hybrid produced by USDA breeders John Carpenter and Joe Furr at Indio, California, and selected and tested at UCR. It was released in August 2009; CCPP first distributed budwood in September 2009.[8][1]
As a rootstock, Furr produced medium-large trees and good yields in UCR trials, with good freezing response in young trees. Disease and soil responses depend on the test: the release report describes CTV tolerance, high tolerance to Phytophthora parasitica and citrus nematode, and moderate tolerance to calcareous soils. [8]Greenhouse nematode screening warrants further evaluation rather than a universal resistance claim.[9]
In The Mulberries’ supplied-fruit tasting, C-57 averaged about 33 g with 17.5 °Brix and approximate pH 3.2. Its companion card describes sweet, sour fruit with low bitterness, mandarin and tropical-fruit notes, and good edibility. [3][10]A separate Carrizo-grafted grower report describes strong lemonlike acidity and easier peeling than C-54/C-22; these limited samples do not establish uniform fruit quality.[6]
