Bowman reports US SuperSour 2 as Benecke trifoliate × (Chinotto sour orange × Citrus ichangensis). USDA/ARS released SS2 on 2 November 2018.[4][2]
Bowman describes SS2 seedlings as having good genetic uniformity. The paper cautions that trifoliate leaf form varies with age and growing conditions and cannot conclusively identify similar unknown rootstocks; molecular markers are recommended for confirmation.[4]
In a replicated Lake County trial planted in 2011, grafted Hamlin trees on SS2 produced 46 kg fruit per tree cumulatively in 2015–17, 53% more than Hamlin on Swingle. This is a site- and scion-specific crop result, not fruit from SS2 or a guarantee of performance elsewhere.[4]
